  Christmas Fair at Sagrada Família

  Following the Catalan tradition of stands devoted to the Christmas holidays, the fair of the Sagrada Família offers many types of complements, from figures and accessories for the traditional nativity scenes to Christmas trees and various decorations. The handicrafts from different countries and by different artists also stand out. The festive atmosphere around this characteristic area of Barcelona is complemented with stands of craft foods such as torrons, cheeses, cold meats, sweets and chestnuts.

  Handel's Messiah Palau de la Música Catalana

  With the Messiah, Handel moved away from his other oratorios, which were of a clear Italian influence, to embrace ancient passions and German cantatas. Composed in London in 1741 in just three weeks, the Messiah has traditionally been linked with Christmas, although the oratorio really runs through the life of Jesus. This month of December, the Palau de la Música Catalana will be the wonderful setting of this magnificent work, by the Vespres d'Arnadí and Xavier Puig.

  Carlos Núñez

  Carlos Núñez is pretty much a standard at the Mil·lenni Festival. The Galician bagpiper has managed to make his concerts both traditional and full of surprises. He has always invited top-level guests such as Roger Hodgson or Serrat to showcase the different aspects of Celtic, Irish, Breton and Galician music.

  Switchingon of the Christmas lights

  The streets of Barcelona welcome Christmas with light and colour. From November 28th, the Christmas spirit will light up until January. The motifs of the lighting are different and varied: you will find traditional lights and also highly innovative compositions which invite you to experience and enjoy what the city is planning for these festivities.

  Family activities at Tibidabo Amusement Park

  Fira de Santa Llúcia

  La Fira de Santa Llúcia is a street market which has been held since at least 1786 in front of the Cathedral around Christmas time. You will find Christmas trees on sale there, as well as baubles, wreaths and mistletoe. However, the main attraction of this fair are the pieces used to set up the nativity scene: figurines, moss, the manger, fountains and the ineffable "caganer" that surprises us every year with new incarnations. During the Fair, there will be lots of activities and shows related to Christmas to enjoy, a tió gigante (giant man), dances and musical performances.

  A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

  The Amics de la Unió Children's Choir together with the Symphonic Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the soprano Ana San Martín and the Tenor Albert Mora will convey to us all the depth of Charles Dickens's famous tale "A Christmas Carol". The ghost of Christmas past, present and future visits Scrooge and forces him to reconsider the type of life he is leading. This is a very special concert with the music composed by Albert Guinovart and the "Arte con Arena" poems by Borja González.

  Descent of the Fallas FiaFaia in Bagà and Sant Julià de Cerdanyola

  The areas of the Pre-Pyrenees and the Pyrenees hold a festival of fire in summer which has been declared as intangible UNESCO cultural Heritage. It involves local people descending with large burning torches (fallas) from the top of the mountain to the village at nightfall. A tradition with rural origins, this ritual is associated with the purification of the fields and woods in order to protect them from evil spirits. This festival has become a magic and light-filled event with mystical connotations featuring a primal light procession. The handmade torches are prepared by people in the village and some can weigh as much as 20 kilograms. Two towns in the area also celebrate this festival on Christmas Eve: Bagà and Sant Julià de Cerdanyola, and on this occasion the tradition is called "Fia-Faia".

  The Nutcracker Casino L'Aliança del Poblenou

  The Barcelona Ballet will perform once again this key classical ballet piece. The Nutcracker is a Christmas story narrating the dream of Clara who travels in her sleep to the Land of Sweets accompanied by the nutcracker soldier after whom the ballet is named. This ballet, perfect for all ages, is a Christmas-themed tale which deals with the nostalgia of long-lost childhood with all the beauty of a romantic ballet.

  Johann Strauss Grand New Year's Day Concert

  Inspired by the traditional concert held in Vienna on 1 January every year, this New Year's Day Grand Concert in which the Strauss Festival Orchestra will perform Strauss's best waltzes, polkas and marches returns to the Gran Teatre del Liceu. Napoleon, Flower Festival, Klipp Klapp, The Emperor Waltz and Champagne. The most famous waltz of all will also be in the repertoire: The Beautiful Blue Danube. So too will the Radetzky march which usually draws the evening to a close to the thunderous applause of the public.
